I Held Death

I Held Death
by Carl Josehart

I held death in my hands today
it was small
and hard
sleek
and heavy
Just weighty enough to convey its importance
and seriousness

It had eight chambers
each polished
and containing a messenger
waiting
ready to find its victim
and deliver him – on command
to death

I held death in my hands today
it contained power
but I did not feel powerful
it was sleek
but I did not feel sexy
it was heavy
and I strained under its weight
and felt sad
that so many cling to death
hoping it will spare their lives
